Sustainability

Balgownie’s Environmental Commitment Balgownie Estate actively implements initiatives to reduce its carbon footprint, with an Environmental Sustainability committee meeting bi-monthly to refine practices in both the vineyards and hospitality operations. Water Conservation In the Yarra Valley, rainwater collected in dams and tanks supports vineyard irrigation and garden maintenance. AAA-rated water-saving devices have reduced external water dependency. Effluent treatment systems save over 7 million liters of water annually by recycling wastewater for irrigation. Solar Power and Energy Efficiency Both Yarra Valley and Bendigo utilize solar power, with 200kw installed in the Yarra Valley and 90kw in Bendigo, making Balgownie a leader in sustainable energy use. Power-saving devices in rooms automatically deactivate air conditioning and lighting when unoccupied, further conserving energy. Sustainable Vineyard Practices Balgownie repurposes grape marc into compost, reducing vineyard water usage by 30% and enriching the soil. Cover crops like peas and beans are planted between vine rows to restore nutrients and minimize fertilizer needs, improving soil structure and preventing weeds. Recycling and Waste Management All Balgownie properties focus on recycling materials such as glass, paper, plastics, and green waste. Recent partnerships with Bottle Cycler and Nespresso help recycle glass and coffee pods. Takeaway containers and cups are eco-friendly, with Nespresso’s cups crafted from 30% coffee bean husks. Guest Towel Policy To conserve resources, guest towels are replaced only upon request, supporting Balgownie’s water and energy-saving goals. Balgownie Estate’s comprehensive sustainability efforts aim to preserve the environment while enhancing wine quality and guest experiences.
