Zoos Victoria halt Nestle products due to palm oil
July 14, 2018
Zoos Victoria shows how serious they are on the issue of sustainable palm oil by halting the sale of Nestle products.
The removal of Nestlé’s food products from their cafes and catering followed the suspension of Nestlé from the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO).
Nestlé certification was suspended after it declined to submit a compulsory report that outlines the steps they have taken and will take towards producing and buying certified sustainable palm oil.
Zoos Victoria has been campaigning for the mandatory labelling of palm oil in Australia for nearly a decade and only sells products that are palm oil-free or contain 100% Certified Sustainable Palm Oil (CSPO) at their three zoos. Palm oil has long been criticised and blamed for threatening the endangered orangutan populations found on Sumatra, Indonesia.
Nestlé has been given until 20 July 2018 to submit the missing report to RSPO and comply with their guidelines. Failure to satisfy these conditions will result in their RSPO membership being terminated.
