Why is Melbourne a global hub for cancer research and international conferences
November 09, 2025
Melbourne continues to play a leading role in the global fight against cancer as the city is set to host the World Cancer Leaders’ Summit 2025, one of the most significant international events in cancer control. This global gathering highlights Melbourne’s position as a centre of excellence in medical research, healthcare innovation, and collaboration.
Following the success of the World Indigenous Cancer Conference 2024, Melbourne has further strengthened its reputation as a destination where world-class researchers, policymakers and healthcare professionals come together to create lasting impact in cancer prevention and treatment. Victoria’s reputation as home to some of Australia’s leading cancer centres will be in the spotlight at the summit. Backed by government, academia and research institutions across the Asia-Pacific region, the summit reinforces Melbourne’s role as a hub for innovation and collaboration in cancer care and research.
The building - located at the heart of the Melbourne Biomedical Precinct - is home to Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre (Peter Mac), Australia’s leading cancer treatment, education and research institute.
Cancer Council Victoria: leading the way
At the heart of Melbourne’s global reputation is Cancer Council Victoria (CCV), the state’s largest not-for-profit funder of cancer research, investing over $20 million each year. Its work has contributed to a 30% improvement in survival rates for common cancers over the past three decades and supports groundbreaking studies across prevention, detection, and treatment.
Flagship initiatives include:
- Australian Breakthrough Cancer Study – investigating genetic, lifestyle, and environmental factors that influence cancer risk.
- Health 2020 – a long-term study tracking over 41,000 Victorians to identify cancer causes and prevention strategies.
These projects highlight Victoria’s leadership in global cancer research and its ongoing commitment to advancing scientific knowledge.
World Cancer Leaders’ Summit 2025: advancing global cancer control
The World Cancer Leaders’ Summit 2025 provides a platform for sharing ideas, research, and strategies to strengthen global cancer control. The Summit takes place from 18–20 November 2025 at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre (MCEC) and is held in partnership with:
- World Health Organization (WHO)
- International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC)
- International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)
The theme, “Bridging Divides, Building Futures”, reflects the goal of reducing inequalities in cancer care and shaping the future of cancer control.
Collaboration across Melbourne’s cancer ecosystem
Melbourne’s reputation as a global cancer hub is powered by partnerships. The Victorian Comprehensive Cancer Centre (VCCC) and VCCC Alliance unite ten of Victoria’s top research, academic, and clinical organisations.
Key highlights:
- Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, located at VCCC, is one of Australia’s leading cancer treatment and research institutes.
- The Alliance’s collaborative approach connects scientists, clinicians, and educators to accelerate translation of discoveries into better patient outcomes.
This strong ecosystem ensures that Melbourne is a city where ideas become breakthroughs and collaboration leads to real-world impact.
Team Melbourne securing global health events
The Melbourne Convention Bureau (MCB), in collaboration with Cancer Council Victoria, the VCCC Alliance, Monash Comprehensive Cancer Consortium, the McCabe Centre for Law and Cancer, and the Victorian Government, proudly led the successful bid to host the World Cancer Leaders’ Summit 2025.
This achievement reflects MCB’s renowned Team Melbourne approach, which brings together key partners across government, academia and industry to deliver exceptional business events that drive innovation and legacy outcomes.
