  • Melbourne hosts the world’s sustainability thinkers

    August 27, 2025

Melbourne is set to become the global epicentre for environmental sustainability this September, welcoming a trio of major international conferences that will shape the future of clean energy, water efficiency, and climate resilience.

The Asia Pacific Wind Energy Summit, the 52nd Congress of the International Association of Hydrogeologists, and the International Water Efficiency Conference will all be held in Melbourne between 15–19 September, backed by strategic support from the Melbourne Convention Bureau.

These wins demonstrate Victoria’s leadership and pivotal role in the Asia Pacific region’s energy and water transition. By working with all tiers of government, research institutions, academia, and innovation hubs, MCB helps position Melbourne as a leading destination for impactful conferences, while delivering growth and social prosperity for Victoria.

Why does Melbourne lead the sustainability conversation?

Victoria’s clean energy sector and commitment to achieving net zero emissions by 2045, five years earlier than the global target and backed by strong interim targets of 65% by 2030 and 95% by 2035, presents significant opportunities.

From repurposing water application for greater climate adaptation to newer emerging energy industries in offshore and onshore wind, Melbourne offers the perfect platform for knowledge sharing, collaboration, innovation, and positive impact. Victoria has met every renewable energy target it has set to date, with more than 42% of the state’s electricity now produced by renewable energy. Melbourne is home to Australia’s top globally ranked universities, cutting edge research facilities, advanced manufacturing, a growing wind industry, and world leading legislation and progressive government programs, making it a natural choice for international investment and sustainability events.

Asia Pacific Wind Energy Summit (APAC WES) | 16–18 September | Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre

Hosted by the Global Wind Energy Council, APAC WES returns to Melbourne for the second time in two years. The summit will bring together policymakers, industry, and researchers to discuss the latest developments in wind energy. At COP28 in Dubai, the world agreed to triple renewable capacity by 2030 and countries around the world are now looking to rapidly expand their renewables deployment. The APAC Summit plays a crucial role in translating this goal into action, particularly in the Asia Pacific region, which holds nearly half (49%) of the world’s 380 GW offshore wind potential.

    Why Melbourne?

Victoria is currently leading the nation as the home of Australia’s first and largest declared offshore wind zone and developers, researchers, and policymakers are converging to shape our electricity future through wind energy. Victoria’s coastline offers some of the country’s strongest wind resources, and the state is investing heavily in transmission infrastructure to support future growth.

Efficient 2025 – IWA Water Efficiency Conference | 16–18 September | Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre

Efficient 2025 is a future-focused international conference that brings together global and local leaders to discuss the many aspects of the efficient use of urban water. Hosted by the Australian Water Association and the International Water Association – the largest national and international water networks with a combined 15,000 members – this event will feature the latest innovations in smart metering, digital water technologies, water reuse and recycling, education and community engagement.

Addressing water efficiency and loss is becoming increasingly critical worldwide, leading to the adoption of new and emerging technologies that enable many other important industries such as agriculture, manufacturing and energy production.

    Why Melbourne?

Australia’s demand for water continues to rise with our growing population and Melbourne is the country's most populous city expected to increase from 5.3 million to 8 million by 2050. Melbourne is a global leader in water innovation and integrated water resource management, with highly collaborative water corporations that work in close partnership with government and First Nations to support the liveability of communities and address important challenges including climate action, adaptation, disaster recovery and cyber security. Melbourne is the perfect hub for convening international discussions and shaping the future of water.

52nd IAH Congress – Hydrogeologists Unite | 15–19 September | Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre

The International Association of Hydrogeologists (IAH) brings its 52nd annual congress to Melbourne, focusing on groundwater science and techniques that shape the production of drinking water, transporting water, managing watercourses to the search for new sources, access to safe water and sufficient quantities.

Groundwater is a vital resource that profoundly impacts environments, economies and communities, particularly as the world faces increasing pressures from population growth and climate change. This Congress provides an invaluable platform to exchange insights and expertise and tackle the challenges ahead.

    Why Melbourne?

Melbourne is a hub of research and tertiary education, hosting around 100,000 international university students and home to Australia’s top globally ranked university. The city’s location along the Birrarung (Yarra River) and its deep connection to the Wurundjeri people of the Kulin Nation provide a powerful cultural and environmental backdrop for the Congress.

A dedicated session will honour Indigenous groundwater connections, rights, values, and knowledge, highlighting the importance of inclusive and culturally informed approaches to water management.

Sustainability in action at the MCEC

All three conferences: APAC WES, IWA Water Efficiency Conference, and the IAH Congress, will be hosted at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre (MCEC), a venue recognised for its sustainability leadership. MCEC integrates environmentally responsible practices across its operations, including plant-forward menus, ultra-local produce from its Greenspace Microfarm, reusable coffee cup programs, and water refill stations. Partnerships with OzHarvest, Procal Dairies, and Bright Spark ensure surplus food and materials are redirected to those in need, supporting both environmental and social outcomes.

MCEC offers more than a venue — it’s a living example of Melbourne’s commitment to sustainable, community-driven innovation.
