A joint biostatistics conference attracted researchers to an insightful program

Biostatisticians gathered in Melbourne during August for the 2018 Joint International Society for Clinical Biostatistics and Australian Statistical Conference (ISCB ASC 2018), to discuss the latest trends and research developments across a variety of areas. 

This year the opportunity presented for the Statistical Society of Australia to hold their meeting in conjunction with the International conference, and Melbourne’s facilities at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre (MCEC) in combination with Melbourne’s reputation in the knowledge sector enabled this.  

The joint meeting combined with the International Society having their meeting for the first time in the Australasian region resulted in the joint event being a huge success. Double the expected attendance was recorded, attracting biostatisticians working across the Asia-Pacific region to interact with international specialists in their field.

The city continues to bring together great minds to benefit from knowledge exchange and learn from inspiring talks. Held every two years, the ISCB is a valuable opportunity for statisticians to explore new research developments and collaborate with other experts across a range of industries.  

Katherine Lee, Associate Professor, Murdoch Children Research Centre was part of the local committee for this conference, demonstrating her passion and local expertise in the field. 

The line-up of renowned keynote speakers was a major drawcard for delegates who came to the conference to hear about the latest findings from the stars of the industry. These included; Chris Holmes, from The University of Oxford, Louise Ryan from The University of Technology in Sydney, Australia, Natalie Shlomo from The University of Manchester, Thomas Lumley from The University of Auckland and Susan Murphy from globally recognised Harvard University.

A welcome reception at MCEC, an informal post-welcome reception at Melbourne's iconic South Wharf, a dinner at Showtime Events Centre, a series of networking events and opportunities to explore Melbourne and regional Victoria were all part of the social program.

Delegates experienced bespoke food tours curated by Hidden Secret Tours, close encounters with native wildlife at Healesville Sanctuary and Yarra Vallley food produce and wine tours, plus the opportunity to see Melbourne on bike with a relaxed bike tour.
