New 2000sqm green rooftop space for Melbourne
May 06, 2019
A 2000sqm rooftop skyfarm is set to open in 2020 with the support of the City of Melbourne Urban Forest Fund and Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre (MCEC).
Located across from MCEC on the Yarra River’s north bank this site is currently a concrete rooftop carpark that will be transformed into a large green space featuring a working farm, orchard, event spaces, sustainable cafe, beehives, a sustainability education centre, and playground.
The working farm will aim to produce five tonnes of fresh food per year with produce going to the onsite cafe and food charities such as OzHarvest and Second Bite.
Brendan Condon, Melbourne Skyfarm’s co-director, says the space was too good to pass up. He sees it as an “opportunity to have a blank slate and create a beautiful space for nature and people together, right in the heart of the city”.
This future inner-city rooftop oasis will attract locals and visitors alike and boost Melbourne's identity as a green city.
