Melbourne number one hotel market in Australia
August 28, 2023
Melbourne is officially now Australia's largest hotel market, adding 4,889 rooms in less than four years, following an unprecedented building boom since 2020 and the opening of 21 new hotels.
The city boasts around 26,500 rooms in total (representing a 23 per cent increase in four years), according to a new report by JLL. With more rooms in the pipeline, Melbourne is expected to top out at around 27,500 rooms.
Event planners and delegates now have even greater choices of accommodation when planning a business event, including Rydges Melbourne, The Ritz-Carlton, Hilton Little Queen Street, W Melbourne, AC Hotel by Marriott Melbourne Southbank and Hyatt Centric.
The city is also well placed to host mega conventions, such as the recent 14,000-delegate Rotary International Convention, held across two venues - Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre (which also happens to be the largest in Australia) and Melbourne & Olympic Parks Rod Laver Arena.
To further the city’s winning streak, Melbourne recently moved into first place as Australia's largest capital city and was awarded the most liveable city in Australia, according to the 2022 Global Liveability Index.
