    Meet Mr Stephen Durkin

Melbourne is committed to continue to be Australia’s knowledge and innovation capital. The city is home to three knowledge precincts bringing together institutions, academia, research and medical centers to foster world-leading innovation.

Some of the world’s greatest minds live here and when hosting business events here, delegates can tap into Melbourne’s knowledge, innovation and technology.

    Mr Stephen Durkin

Stephen Durkin is CEO of AusIMM, the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, representing 13,000 professionals in the resources sector. Prior to this role, Stephen led Engineers Australia for five years, the peak body for engineering with over 100,000 members. Stephen has a broad range of executive experience around the globe covering professional associations, consulting and financial services.  Stephen was Monash University’s Civil Engineering Alumnus of the Year in 2014 and from 2016-2017 was on the Prime Minister’s Industry 4.0 Taskforce.

Stephen is passionate about the role of conferences in building the brand of associations and raising the profile of the people they represent. AusIMM’s international events showcase the work of modern mining professionals who are building a safer, more sustainable resource sector.

As a Club Melbourne Ambassador Stephen has worked with Melbourne Convention Bureau (MCB) to champion many international conferences. This includes a recent successful bid for Melbourne to host the International Mineral Processing Congress (IMPC) 2022 and winning the bid to bring AusRock 2022, a major international mining conference, to Melbourne.

On working with MCB, Stephen commented, “This was a great opportunity to bring global mining delegates to Melbourne, a premier business events destination which is also home to some of the biggest mining companies in the world. Through hosting a conference in Victoria, we’ll be able to showcase Australia’s resources and research sector to a broad audience, with all the benefits of drawing people to a vibrant and modern capital city.”
