Accessibility in action: Experiences that welcome every delegate
October 09, 2025
Melbourne is globally recognised for hosting exceptional business events, and what sets it apart is its commitment to accessibility. Across cultural institutions, wellness retreats and heritage attractions, Victoria leads the way in inclusive design, ensuring every delegate can participate fully, comfortably and confidently.
Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre (MCEC) – Championing accessibility and inclusion
At the heart of Melbourne’s event landscape, the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre (MCEC) is leading the way in accessibility and event inclusivity. Operated by the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Trust (MCET), MCEC has developed a comprehensive Accessibility Action Plan (FY25–27) that embeds inclusion into every part of the delegate and organiser journey, the first of its kind in an Australian convention centre.
The plan aligns with the Victorian Disability Act 2006 and focuses on improving access to facilities, increasing employment opportunities for people with disability, collaborating with event organisers to ensure equitable participation, and challenging barriers and attitudes within the events industry. Delegates benefit from thoughtful, practical features across the venue and online experience, including:
- Step-free access and wide corridors throughout the complex
- Accessible parking with lift access to key entry points
- Hearing-assistive devices, Braille and tactile signage, and high-contrast wayfinding
- Changing Places facility equipped with adult change tables, ceiling hoist and accessible shower facilities, designed in consultation with users and placed near high-traffic event zones.
- Guide and assistance dog support, accessible toilets, and wheelchair seating with companion areas in major spaces
- WCAG 2.0 AA standards, the website offers 360° virtual tours of the venue for organisers and delegates to preview layouts, entrances and amenities in advance
- MCEC's participation in the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Program, recognising invisible access needs discreetly and respectfully
For business event organisers committed to inclusive design, MCEC offers not just a venue, but a partner in delivering barrier-free experiences by combining infrastructure, policy and empathy.
