Collecting Comme, NGV International
Rei Kawakubo of Comme des Garçons is one of the most visionary and influential fashion designers working today. Since the late 1970s, her intent has always been ‘to make clothes that didn’t exist before’ and she has consistently defied convention to redefine fashion. Collecting Comme examines the radical concepts and design methods that have informed Kawakubo’s practice since 1981, the year she first presented in Paris. Featuring more than fifty examples drawn from the NGV’s significant Comme des Garçons holdings, generously gifted to the Gallery by Takamasa Takahashi, and supported by additional loans from his archive, the exhibition highlights key collections and recurrent themes in Kawakubo’s work. Now a staple of the summer months, Melbourne’s original and favourite night market is set to return to the Queen Victoria Market this month. The Hardware Club
Ciao Pizza Napoli opens after an eight-week renovation as the Hardware Club, paying homage to the Hardware Lane institution while delivering a fresh spin on one of Melbourne’s oldest pizzerias. State Library of Victoria
The State Library of Victoria will open the doors to its transformed library on 5 December. The re-opening will mark the completion of an ambitious $88.1 million redevelopment that will increase public space by 40% and seating by 70%. Nearly five years in the making, the Vision 2020 redevelopment responds to the changing needs of the Library’s growing community, providing better access to the world’s best knowledge today and into the future. Australia’s oldest and busiest public library will soon open a suite of new spaces, programs and services, including a revitalised Swanston Street entrance, The Ian Potter Queen’s Hall, Hansen Hall, The Quad, Conversation Quarter, Ideas Quarter, Create Quarter and Pauline Gandel Children’s Quarter and Victoria Gallery, a brand new world class exhibition space.
