The International Symposium on Pneumococci and Pneumococcal Diseases (ISPPD) is a non-profit, non-governmental association and has its headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland. The ISPPD was officially launched on 11th March, 2012 during the ISPPD-8 Symposium in Foz de Iguaçu, Brazil. Currently, the main activity of the ISPPD Association is the ISPPD international symposia, the leading event in Pneumococci and Pneumococcal Diseases bringing together professionals in the field to raise global awareness and improve standards of diagnosis, prevention and treatment.
The rationale for creating ISPPD originated with the need for a legal framework for the ISPPD Symposium. Initiated in 1998 at the 1st meeting in Denmark, ISPPD conferences have been organized every 2 years in different countries with local sponsors. The number of delegates has grown significantly over the years, recently reaching 1000 delegates.
The general purpose of the ISPPD Association is to improve knowledge of the pneumococcus and to fight and prevent its major global burden of disease. To realize this mission the objectives of ISPPD are as follows:
